Phagocytosis of cellular particles such as apoptotic bodies is required for tissue remodeling and cellular clearance.Particle binding triggers a cascade of signaling locally to orchestrate focal cytoskeleton reorganization and delivery of membranes from intracellular pools, resulting in the extension of plasmalemmal pseudopods.Lysosomal membrane is a major source of intracellular membrane required for particle ingestion, and is delivered to phagocytic cups via Ca2+-dependent "focal" exocytosis.
