Large-conductance voltage-and Ca2+-activated potassium (BK) channels exhibit substantial kinetic and functional differences, mainly arising from tissue-specific expression of auxiliary β subunits. The β1-subunit, associated with the BK pore-forming mSlolα subunit, is enriched in smooth muscle (SM) and plays an important role in regulating relaxation of arterial smooth muscle based on the experimental data of β1-knockout (KO) mice.
