Purpose To investigate morphologic changes of meibomian glands with aging and pursue the possible relationship with the epidemiology of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).Methods One hundred and twenty normal volunteers were recruited in this study and grouped according to their age.Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire was taken.Clinical and demographic data, including age, gender, noninvasive tear film breakup time (NI-BUT), and Schirmer I test values were collected from the subjects.Images of meibomian glands were taken with Oculus Keratograph by a masked technician.Quantification of meibomian glands including average lengths, surface areas, and volumes of the glands was done with NIH Image J software.Statistical analysis was made between different age groups to compare the results.
