A contract research organization (CRO) is an organization that provides support to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries in the form of research services outsourced on a contract basis.There are over 1 100 CROs in the world, despite continued trends toward consolidation, and the market size is estimated at >$35 billion now.For example, WuXi AppTec is a leading CRO with about 9000 employees, providing a broad and integrated portfolio of services throughout the drug R&D process.A scientist, either working in a CRO or a pharmaceutical company, may be doing the same daily research work.
