Cancer is generally described as a "disease of the genes".The sequencing of the human genome set the stage for what is currently an unprecedented, and many would say unbalanced, focus on cataloguing abnormal genes in cancer.These efforts, enabled in large measure by large scale projects like The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), are driving a vision of precision medicine-i.e., knowing the genomic alterations will enable the development of interventions that are targeted to these aberrant genes and "pathways".While identifying these changes in cancer genomes is of significant value, it is clearly insufficient.Cancer is an extraordinarily complex disease that involves the transfer and management of aberrant digital information from the genome across multiple scales.This complexity is manifest in nearly all aspects of cancer: spatial and temporal effects;cellular heterogeneity;evolution and resistance to therapy;biomechanical attributes that enable metastasis;and the ongoing inability of current approaches to cure metastatic cancers-to name a few.In fact, cancer is increasingly viewed as a complex adaptive system (CAS).
