Kaposis sarcoma (KS) is difficult to distinguish from other angioproliferative diseases, particularly in Africa where access to trained pathologists is limited to a few hospitals and immunohistochemistry is frequently not available, and the cost of antibodies to KSHV LANA may be prohibitive.Multiple studies have shown that PCR based nucleic acid identification of Kaposis sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV-8) in skin biopsies is highly sensitive and can be used to diagnose KS in the absence of immunohistochemistry.
