Breast cancer represents a heterogeneous group of diseases.According to molecular classification of breast cancer, at least 5 groups exist.ER positive and ER negative breast cancers are two different diseases with regards to clinical, pathological and molecular features as well as available therapeutic modalities and response to therapy. However, ER-negative breast cancer is a heterogeneous group by itself.Triple negative breast cancer corresponds to ER-negative and PR/HER2 negative breast cancer. These tumors account for approximately 15% of breast cancers.Triple negative breast cancers have shown to include basal-like tumors, adenoid cystic carcinoma, metaplastic carcinoma, secretory and myoepithelial carcinoma.Majority of cancers from this group have a poor outcome, but some have a favourable course.Treatment also varies and may include specific agents (e.g.PARP-inhibitors in patients with BRCA-1 mutation). At this time, molecular classification is not part of the everyday clinical practice;it is more important to differentiate each subgroup of breast cancer separately to tailor appropriate treatment accordingly.
