The last two decades witnessed a proliferation of research on the impact of positive psychological characteristics on health in Western populations.Similar lines of research with Chinese samples have emerged only recently. My research has been focusing on optimism in adolescents and students in Hong Kong.As with findings reported in studies with Westem samples, my studies have shown that higher optimism in Chinese adolescents and students is associated with lower health complaints, lower distress, and higher well-being.One of my recent studies (Lai, 2009) has also shown that optimism reduces the negative impact of daily stress on health in adolescents.Despite the significance of these findings, one issue remains inadequately addressed: what are the possible biological mechanisms mediating the impact of the aforementioned positive characteristics on health? One of my recent studies (Lai et al., 2005) was an attempt to address this issue by examining the association between positive psychological characteristics (e.g., optimism and positive affects) and levels of salivary cortisol in Hong Kong Chinese. The results showed that higher optimism was associated with lower levels of cortisol in the post-awakening period. Moreover, higher levels of positive affect were associated with a lower level of diurnal cortisol. As cortisol is the major end-product of the hypothalamic-adrenocortical axis, neuroendocrine functioning could be a possible mediator of the well-documented relationship between positive psychological characteristics and health.
