English author W. M. Thackeray once wrote, "If you don't speak a word of French, if you like English comfort, clean rooms, breakfast and ma?tres d'h?tel; if in a foreign land, you want your fellow countrymen around you, your brown beer, your friend and your cognac - and your water - do not listen to any of the messengers but with your best British accent cry heartily: "Meurice! and immediately, someone will come forward to drive you straight to the rue de Rivoli."
From then on, there was no one who did not know Le Meurice on the Rue de Rivoli, Paris. Especially for the guests from the UK, Le Meurice has always been their first choice. It was because one could converse in English without trouble in the hotel, which was very rare in France at that time.
When Queen Victoria visited France, Le Meurice was undoubtedly chosen for her stay. Since then, European royals had frequented, making Le Meurice the hotel of Kings and Queens. The King of Spain Alphonse XIII stayed regularly in Suite 106-8, bringing his own furniture.
In the long span of time, too many famous names have been associated with this hotel. In 1857, the young Lev Tolstoy came to Paris for the first time in his trip to Europe, and he stayed in Le Meurice on the first night; in 1879, at the peak of his fame,39 year-old Tchaikovsky held his solo concert in Paris, who also lived in Le Meurice; after 1918, the 37 year-old genius painter Picasso held his first wedding dinner in Pompadour Salon of Le Meurice with his Russian dancer bride Olga Khokhlova whom he met in Italy a year ago; and then, for thirty years since 1950, Spanish surrealism painter Dalí spent several months every year in Le Meurice. Between age 40 to 70, this hotel has literally become Dalí's home in France; In 2011, Woody Alan wrote and directed the film Midnight in Paris, and the key scene is filmed at Suite La Belle Etoile on top of the hotel......
Today, numerous celebrities stays in Le Meurice, and it is known that heads of state favor this elegant residence the most when they visit Paris. When foreign heads come to stay, Le Meurice would still be open to the public as usual and maintain the highest level of security in its reception, for which the hotel has long been praised.
