前不久,24岁的新疆库车县(古西域龟兹地区)维吾尔族农民阿不来提·买买提,在县城以北60公里的一条峡谷崖壁上采药时,意外发现了座盛唐时代的佛教石窟。阿不来提·买买提深深惊叹于洞窟内精美绝伦的壁画,并迅速向当地政府报告了他的“重大发现”。得知情况后,新疆龟兹石窟研究所的文物工作者20多人立即赶到现场。对石窟进行了全面清理:测量了洞窟形制和大小,临摹了保存的壁画,并对石窟全貌进行了拍照。从洞窟清理出的佛头、石佛雕塑等文物也已送新疆龟兹石窟研究所妥善保管。
