Teeth like of sabres probably conjures up② images of fearsome meateating mammals who ruled their territory snarling and bounding with muscular③ prowess.
But scientists have now discovered a sabretoothed beast that feasted on leaves and stems some 260 million years ago in Brazil — and looked more like a tortoise than a feared predator.
Despite its vegetarian④ tendencies, the dagger teeth will have helped it deal with predators⑤ and enemies.
In addition to the crayonsize sabre canines, the entire roof of its mouth was covered with teeth.
Grasses did not exist at that time but it may have fed on stems or leaves of Permian⑥ flora⑦.The scientists detailed their findings in the March 25 issue of the journal Science.
