在我们所学习的英语单词中，在单词后加字母“s”被认为是名词的复数形式或一般现在时第三人称后动词变形的一般形式。但在有些单词中后加“s”就应小心对待，以免落入望文生义的陷阱。
1.一些动词后+“s”
动词后加“s”其词性及词义都发生了变化，如：
preserve——preserves
preserve v.保护；保存；维持
The Town Council spent a lot of money to preserve the old castle and other places of historic interest .市政委员会花了不少钱来维修那座古城堡和其它古迹。
You can preserve meat or fish in salt.你可以用盐保存肉或鱼。
It is one of the duties of the police to preserve public order .警察的职责之一是维持公共秩序。
preserves n 蜜饯（水果）；腌制（蔬菜等）
We’ll put a selection of preserves on your tray.我们会放一些蜜饯在托盘上供你选择。
return——returns
return v.回报，归还
We return her bottles to the store.我们将瓶子送还商店。
He returned her book.他归还了她的书。
returns n. 利润，利润率，成果
small profits and quick returns 薄利多销
look——looks
look v.看，注意
looks n.容貌，外表，外貌
The famous actor kept his good looks even in old age.
这位著名的演员即使年老了，仍保持着好看的容貌。
Good looks are not as important as kindness.好的容貌没有好的心肠重要。
2.某些形容词后+“s”
形容词后加“s”其词性及词义也都发生了变化，如：
blue——blues
blue adj. 蓝色的，忧郁的，沮丧的
blues n.忧郁，郁闷，忧郁或压抑的情绪；布鲁斯音乐（美国黑人的一种民歌）
The blues have finally gotten me today.忧郁的情结今天最终还是降临到我心头。
I really have the blues today.
我今天情绪确实有些不好。
He is crazy about blues.
他非常喜欢布鲁斯音乐。
good——goods
good adj.好的，优良的
goods n.商品，货物（龙指布匹、食品、糖果等）
goods train
货物列车
There’s a large variety of goods in the shops.商店内有品种繁多的货物。
green——greens
green adj. 绿色的，未成熟的，无经验的
greens n.蔬菜，植物
3.某些名词后+”s”
一般是名词的复数形式，但有些名词后加“s”，其词义就会发生变化，如：
damage——damages
damage n.损失；损害，损坏
The storm did a lot of damage to the crops.
暴风雨使庄稼受到了很大损失。
damages n.赔偿费
to claim damages 索赔
The court awarded ￡500 in damages to the injured.
法庭判给受伤者500英镑的赔偿费。
minute——minutes
minute n.分；一会儿，片刻，瞬间
Just a minute ，please.请稍等一会。
I’ll join you in a minute.我立刻就来和你们相会。
minutes n.（会议）记录；摘录
the minutes of a meeting会议记录
custom-customs
custom n.习惯，风俗
commercial custom商业惯例
It is the custom with the local people to do so.这种作法是当地人的习惯。
customs .n 进口税，海关
customs duty关税
At the airport，the customs officers searched his case.
在机场，海关人员检查了他的箱子。
manner-manners
manner n.做事的方法，事情了生的方式；态度，举止
a very rude manner 很粗鲁的态度
Why are you talking in such a strange manner？你为什么用这种奇怪的方式谈话？
Manners n.礼貌，礼节；风俗，习俗
It’s bad manners to talk with a full mouth.嘴里吃着东西说话是不礼貌的。

因此我们在学习英语单词时一定要注意加“s”的情况，不能马虎，以免出错。
