Pith cavity is the hollow part in the internodes of plant stem,it is widespread in Poales plants. To determine how the pith cavity is formed, the development of the stem in Triticum aestivum Linn.was observed by means of light microscopy, transmission electron microscope, and the detection of in situ DNA fragmentation were tested by TUNEL and DAPI assays.Anatomical observation revealed tonoplast of pith parenchyma cell invaginated to form specialised vesicles that were similar to the apoptotic bodies in animal,in which organelles and cytoplasm endocytosed were degraded.
