  The rhizoma of Pinellia ternata has been documented as an effective herb for the treatment of antitussive,anti-inflammatory and anti-emetic in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years in China.This study was aimed at evaluating the total organic acids,total alkaloids,antitussive and anti-inflammatory activities in vivo of crude Pinellia ternata and its four processed products.The results showed that the content of total organic acids and total alkaloids varied from 2.0 to 2.7 mg ·g-1 and 5.0 to 7.6 mg ·g-1,respectively.The total organic acids of crude Pinellia ternate and its processed products showed antitussive activity.In ammonium hydroxide induced cough,the total organic acids of crude Pinellia ternate in a dose of 0.84 g · kg-1 (P<0.01) brought about a significant increase in the latent period and Rhizoma Pinelliae in a dose of 0.84 g · kg-1 (P<0.01) showed the lowest coughing times in 3 min.
