High-quality quartz is a basic material for special silicon glass. With the rapid development of silicon industrial, more high-quality silicon materials are required and it is urgent to efficiently explore quartz veins using remote sensing techniques. As the main composition of quartz vein, silica (SiO2) has relative high reflectivity in the visible-near infrared spectral range (0.4~2.5?m) and strong vibration at fundamental frequencies in the thermal infrared spectrum (8~12?m).Generally,the rock with high content of SiO2 shows bright in optical remote sensing imagery as highlight tonal feature, and the SiO2 content of a rock can be empirically estimated with thermal infrared bands. With respect to the two spectral characteristics of quartz,a new method is proposed in this paper to explore quartz veins in mountain areas in southern Shandong Province. In this method, bright patterns are extracts from igh-spatial-resolution remote sensing images downloaded from Google Earth website,SiO2 contents are estimated from thermal infrared bands in ASTER data, and the regional geological background and the correlation between bright values with SiO2 contents are taken into account. In the field validation,s exposed thick quartz veins were found within or near the three potential areas of quartz veins, which were delineated by the method proposed in this paper. The method, based on the brightness information from high-spatial-resolution imagery, the spectral features of quartz vein at thermal infrared bands, and the favourable geological strata, can efficiently predict and delineate quartz veins.
