Tajikistan has a large number of unique and unusual plants, such as cryptogamic (algae, lichens, mosses, fungi) and phanerogamic (vascular) plants.More than 9000 species (including all phanerogamic (Pteridophyta- 22 species,Gymnospermae- 35,Monocotyledoneae- 752, Dicotyledoneae- 3702 species) and cryptogamic (Algae- more than 2000 species,,Lichenes- 524, Fungi- more than 2000,and Bryophyta- 358 species) are thought to distribute in Tajikistan.Among the vascular plants there are 321 species are invasive or have introduced in Tajikistan through 50-100 latest years.Tajikistan as a mountainous region (93% of territory, with a most complex geological and geomorphological structure and hypsometry elevation from 300 to 6000-7000 m above sea-level) with different ecological conditions has resulted in a rich diversity of unique life forms. For example, nearly 20 per cent of the flowering plant species are found nowhere else. Not only is this living plants resources part of our cultural identity of life.Lack of knowledge about the diversity of life on this country and the effect of scientific activities on this invaluable resource pose the most significant barrier to their management and conservation.Plant ecosystems of Tajikistan is an important component of natural resource potential of the country, and has a special role in prevention of desertification and biodiversity conservation under global climate change. With the current destruction of habitats occurring at critically rapid pace throughout the Tajikistan, the degree of potential loss of species makes this region a high priority for study of biodiversity and development of conservation programs.
