Wild relatives of tomato have proven to be a significant source of genes that have led to dramatic improvement of the cultivated tomato,Lycopersicon esculentum.The primary gene pool of tomato has also provided genes that have led to genetic improvement of tomato.Resistance to nematodes,fusarium,verticillium,tobacco mosaic virus and leaf mould are all examples of genetic solutions to very significant production problems.Use of genetic resistance has allowed greater vegetable production,and has improved vegetable quality and safety.The wild species of tomato have many additional genetic characters that could be extremely useful for improving tomato production,and in particular,resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses.
