Growing number of experimental and clinical data provide evidence for mutual associations between neurogenic stress, depression and cardiovascular diseases.Elevated activity of the sympathetic system, which is present during prolonged neurogenic stress and depression, potentiates cardiovascular responses to sudden challenges and potentiates a risk of ventricular arrhythmia and mortality in arterial hypertension and cardiac failure.Recent studies show that the altered regulation of the cardiovascular system during chronic stress and depression is caused by inappropriate activation of neurotransmitter/neuropeptide regulatory networks of the brain.Current investigations focus on the role of central and peripheral angiotensin AT1, vasopressin V1, cytokine and oxytocin receptors in determination of tolerance of a neurogenic stress in the cardiovascular diseases. At present, there is considerable evidence for negative role of altered engagement of the angiotensinergic, vasopressinergic and cytokine pathways in the regulation of cardiovascular functions during stress and depression.
