Background: In its report the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (2009) asserts that "priority health-risk behaviours, which are behaviours that contribute to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among youth and adults, often are established during childhood and adolescence, extend into adulthood, and are interrelated and preventable".For example, all over the world we have high rates of current smoking among adolescents, with initiation of smoking occurring at progressively younger ages, and alcohol continues to be the most common substance of abuse among youths. Methods: SEYLE (Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe), funded by the European Union, is a randomized controlled trial of mental health promotion and suicide prevention among European adolescents. The Italian sample consisted of 1195 high school students (mean age 15.3±0.6; 68% females) from the Molise region.Baseline data about substance abuse (alcohol, illegal drugs and tobacco), school attendance and other risk behaviours, were collected using a structured questionnaire. Results: 12,5% of this sample had a drink containing alcohol 2 times a week or more; 8% has used drugs, 48,4% has smoked cigarettes (4,05±6,1 cigarettes per day) and 24,8% had sexual intercourse (of these 17,6% used condom rarely or never) at least once in their life.During the 12 months before the survey, 18.7% has ride in a vehicle driven by someone who had been drinking alcohol and, during the 2 weeks before, 2,8% has missed class without permission 3 days or more. Conclusion: Several behaviours which are associated with the leading causes of mortality and morbidity, such as those presented in this analysis, adversely affect adolescents and increase the risk of developing health problems in adulthood. Therefore there is a need to promote healthy lifestyle patterns early during the adolescence.
