  Objective: To explore the characteristics of 586 high suicide risk callers and the effectiveness of suicide intervention called Beijing crisis hotline.Methods: Beijing crisis hotline arranged 24 hours, one-week and one-month follow-up for high risk callers who were assessed by a screening instrument of depression base on DSM-Ⅳ diagnostic criteria of major depressive disorder.Before ending the call callers were informed of the purpose of the high risk follow up, and the hotline counsellors will set the follow up date and time with the caller.586 high risk callers called Beijing crisis hotline from January 2006 to August 2010 were analyzed using a self-developed questionnaire.And 493 callers finished all three follow-up.Results: 1).59.7% callers were female; the average age was (29.0 ± 9.3) years old; the mean years of education was (12.5 ± 3.6) years; 60.1% were unmarried; 16.7% were students, 41.8% were unemployed; 2).The top three main issues of the calls were mental and psychological problems, family relationship problems and relationship problems with others; (3).Other characteristics: 353 callers (60.2%) had psychiatric diagnosis, 289 (49.3%) callers had past suicide attempt and 234 (39.9%) callers whose family or friend had suicidal behaviour.(4).Effectiveness of suicide intervention: the suicide status included immediate and the three follow-up were all reduced (X2=1384.26, P<0.001) , and each latter suicide status was lessen than the former one (P<0.001).Immediate and the other three follow-up results showed a significant intervention effect.Conclusion: Crisis hotline can reduce to some extent the degree of caller s suicide risk; and the follow-up intervention services should be provided in order to maintain the effectiveness of the intervention.
