Background: Adolescents suicide rate is rapidly rising in Korea. In this study, it was hypothesized that frustrated interpersonal needs would result in adolescents suicidal behaviour. Both burdensomeness and frustrated belongingness (based on Joiners interpersonal theory of suicide) were included in the interpersonal factors which affect adolescents suicide risk.Based on Shneidmans theory, it was also hypothesized that the path between frustrated interpersonal needs and suicide risk would be mediated by mental pain. Methods: 380 high school students (190 female, 190 male) were participated in this study.Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) was adopted to test the mediating role of mental pain in the relationship between interpersonal factors and suicide risk. Results: It was found that the path between frustrated interpersonal needs and suicide risk was mediated by mental pain.Among female students, path of burdensomeness (frustrated interpersonal needs), narcissistic wounds (mental pain) and suicide risk was significant.Whereas, for male students, irreversibility was the factor of mental pain which significantly affect the path between frustrated interpersonal needs and suicide risk. Conclusion: Mediating role of mental pain was found in the relationship between frustrated interpersonal needs and suicide risk among Korean highschool students.Discriminatory approach to suicidal adolescents according to gender was recommended based on the results.
