Objectives: Protective factors for suicide have been widely studied in the world. It is suspected that difference may exist on the attitudes towards suicide and death between Chinese and American people. The aim of this study is to apply an instrumeht for acquiring and assessing protective factors for Chinese college students. Methods: College students who attempted suicide were recruited for interview.Semi-structure interview guide was discussed by postgraduate students with major in psychotherapy at Peking University. The Chinese College Student Reasons for Living Inventory (CCSRLI) was developed and included 36 items which were divided into six dimensions.Data were collected from undergraduates at different colleges in Beijing (Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications). Results: We randomly selected 500 subjects and conducted factor analysis (KMO=0.928, P<0.001).The results showed that the inventory eventually consist of 24 items and revealed 6 factors which was able to explain 47% of variance, including the present (9 items), social pressure (3 items), responsibility to family (4 items), fear of death (4 items), moral belief (2 items) and the longing for the love (2 items). The other 557 subjects were recruited for conformity factor analysis. All indexes were well fitted (x2 =670.95, df =237, x2/df =2.83, RMSEA =0.057, CFI =0.97, GFI =0.91).Scale Cronbach α is 0.88.Factors Cronbach α coefficients were 0.67-0.88.The overall CCSRLI score and each factor score correlation coefficient was 0.63-0.82.Conclusion: The CCSRLI demonstrates good reliable and valid construct. The inventory will be valuable for crisis intervention and clinical practice in college.
