Styrylpyrone-class polyphenols are one of the major classes of secondary metabolites produced by Inonotus obliquus in its natural habitats. This class of compounds is believed to be the effective substances able to selectively induce apoptosis of hepatocinoma, and a promising agent to quench free radicals. In nature, however, I.obliquus grows very slowly, and its sclerotial form is not a reliable source for these polyphenols.
