Protein glycosylation is a vital cellular process which regulates the structure, location, stability and function of a protein.Asn-linked glycosylation (ALG) occurs only in eukaryotes. It has been estimated that 1% of the open reading frames of a genome are dedicated to this process.Although ALG is relative conservative in mammalian cells, there are several unique features found in protozoan parasites.First, the kinetoplastid Trypanosoma cruzi does not have glucosylated dolichol-PP-linked precursors.Second,a group of protozoa have truncated ALG precursors.Third,ALG from either Giardia lamblia (cause of diarrhea) or Plasmodium falicparum (cause of severe malaria) have non-mannosylated precusors. In this report,I describe additional uniqueness of N-linked glycans in protozoa via bioinformatics tools from genomewide screening. And,the validation of the in silico results via experimental data. The potential applications of the discovery will be discussed.
