Novel chemotherapeutic agents derived from bioactive phytochemicals could be used as adjuvants and improve the anticarcinogenicity of standard drug treatments.Our recent studies have shown that herbal terpenoids possess antitumor activities and suggest that these components constitute a new class of cancer chemopreventive agents.We have revealed the growth-inhibitory and proapoptotic properties of several herbal terpenoids in colon cancer cells.In particular, the total saponin extract from the medicinal herb radix Astragalus membranaceus (AST) AST suppresses cancer growth by inhibiting proliferation through phase-specific celt cycle arrest and promotion of caspase-dependent apoptosis in human colon cancer cells and tumor xenograft.
