The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is dramatically increasing in Western world.It has become the 7th leading cause of cancer death.Survival of esophageal cancer is stage-dependent.Pre-operative staging utilizing the TNM system is done by EUS, chest and abdominal CT scan and PET-CT.The 5-year survival of stage 0 and stage 1 carcinoma of the esophagus is over 90% and about 70% respectively, however, it falls to 25% in patients with stage 3.Early diagnosis, multidisciplinary approach and increased in specialist units are important factors in improving results.
