The effects of maternal influenza infection on the fetus are not well understood.To date there is little information regarding whether H7N9 influenza virus may be vertically transmitted across the placenta.Here we present a unique case in which fetal demise occurred during the hospitalization of a pregnant woman infected with the H7N9 influenza virus.Histopathologic data as well as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were used to determine the likelihood of placental transmission of the H7N9 influenza virus.
