村上春树小说中的离奇失踪与费心寻觅很多。貌似离奇的故事情节中,隐藏着作者对时势的感叹。其中,集大成之作,代表性的失踪,当属《象的失踪》了。在这篇文章中,从镇长、镇议会对老象自始至终出于利益考虑的处置,到“我”对其偷偷摸摸的关注,到一般市民对这种关注的不理解,处处都在感叹世间功利、对文化的漠视。之所以说《象的失踪》具有代表性,除了失踪物本身的独特寓意,还有它带来的反响不只限于局部,而是政客、媒体、一般市民,即全民众。再有作者在这部作品中也比较旗帜鲜明,暗示了“本案”的罪魁祸首,急功近利的社会无时无刻不在强迫不合其潮流的人或物随波逐流。
