The backcalculation of slope failure essentially involves the determination of various geotechnical parameters of various soil layers in the slope at the limit equilibrium moment. These unknown parameters may be either one, cohesion, friction angle, pore pressure coefficient, or a set of coordinates to determine the pressure surface and the density of soil any combination. In the inverse calculation, it is assumed that the failure plane or the known failure plane passes through these layers. Destructive surfaces are usually characterized by on-site investigation of the traces of displacement of the slope and surface cracks, or by information on the critical failure surface as generally determined during the design phase, or by the measured failure of the slope.
