《英语教学的新方向》(New Orientations in the Teaehing of English)一书系彼得·斯特雷文斯(Peter Strevens)根据其六十年代、七十年代中期在多次学术会议上提出的大部分论文编篡而成,由牛津大学出版社于1977年出版。全书五个部分,计十四章,共195页。第一部分为“语言教学的原则和理论”。在头三章中提供了有用的语言教学专业背景、语言教学和学习程序的模式以及“应用语言学”扩大了的定义。第四章叙述了语言习得(通过交往学得语言)同语言学习(通过一定研究形式学得语言)完全不同。进而认为,语言教学仪仅涉及语言学习,而与语言习得无关;因而对语言习得的研究与语言教学并不相干。这些有争议的定义和主张,许多语言教师和应用语言学家将不会接受。
Peter Strevens, the book New Directions in the Tea of the English, based on many of the many scientific presentations of his 1960s and mid-1970s The essay was compiled and published by Oxford University Press in 1977. The book consists of five parts, including fourteen chapters, a total of 195 pages. The first part is “Principles and Theory of Language Teaching ”. The first three chapters provide a useful background in language teaching, patterns of language teaching and learning programs, and an expanded definition of “applied linguistics.” The fourth chapter states that language acquisition (learning languages through communication) is completely different from language learning (learning languages through certain forms of research). Furthermore, it is believed that language teaching instrument only involves language learning, but has nothing to do with language acquisition; therefore, the study of language acquisition is not related to language teaching. These controversial definitions and claims will not be accepted by many language teachers and applied linguists.
