Wal-Mart China’s former CEO Ed Chan joined in another retail giant Lotus. It was reported that he would take the CEO of Lotus for 4 years. He took the job upon the invitation of Dhanin Cheara-vanont, board chairman of Thailandbased Charoen Pokphand Group.
Lotus had a close relation with Wal-Mart in the history. In 1995, Charoen Pokphand Group and Wal-Mart introduced Kiwiplaza (predecessor of Lotus) in China. The first result of their cooperation was the supermarket in Middle Yanggao Road, Shanghai. Lotus completely copied the pattern of Wal-Mart in China but the two companies parted their ways. Now Lotus devotes itself to expanding the market of East China while Wal-Mart stays in South China. It is reasonable for Lotus to recruit “a former CEO of Wal-Mart China” given the “Wal-Mart blood”it has. In addition, Wal-Mart’s former COO Jim Haworth took the president of Lotus China in 2006 and now is the board chairman of Lotus China.
There are a lot of challenges in front of Lotus in 2012. In 2011 it closed several supermarkets before getting into the field of convenient stores. It launched the “Lotus Life Station”which combines four kinds of services in Shanghai, China.
Analysts think that Ed Chan’s arrival in Lotus could accelerate the speed of this retailer’s opening stores. He could even boost the development of Lotus’ business.
