Gongsun Hong, a scholar in the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC – 9 AD), was very poor at his youth. He used to feed pigs by the sea. He began to study the Chinese classic book the Spring and Autumn Annals when he was 40. When he was 60 yeas old, the Emperor Wu of Han began to recruit the well-educated scholars to work for the court. Gongsun Hong was one of the scholars having been recruited. He rose to the prime minister of the Han court when he was 67 and was titled as the Marquis of Pingjin.
Gongsun Hong still lived a simple life despite his nobility. He only had one dish with meat every day and all his salaries were offered to his friends who had helped him and guests who visited him. Thus his family had no accumulative assets.
Later the lords in Huainan and Hengshan staged a revolt against the Han Dynasty. When Emperor Wu was busy defeating the rebel army, Gongsun Hong fell ill and had to rest at home. He thought that he could not contribute to repressing the revolt and could not live up to his position as the prime minister. Therefore he chose to write a letter to Emperor Wu to resign from his position. Emperor Wu wrote back to him and said: “You just had a small disease that can be cured very soon like the frost in the cold weather and dew in the morning which will disappear very quickly. Presently there are a lot of affairs in the court for you to attend. You should go to the doctor, get some herbs and have a good rest before standing on your foot and returning to your work. What made you want to resign?”
In addition to that, Emperor Wu sent him a large amount of meat, wine, herbs and nutrients to help his recovery. Soon Gongsun Hong’s disease was cured and he returned to the court to attend to the state affairs.
