Zong Shilin was a historical figure from Nanyang at the end of Eastern Han Dynasty (25– 220). He was a contemporary with Cao Cao, a famous warlord at that time. But Zong Shilin looked down upon Cao Cao for his personality and refused to make friend with him.
Then Cao Cao was promoted to the prime minister of the court and monopolized the national power. He asked Zong Shilin: “Now can we make friends?”
Zong Shilin still rejected him and said: “I still have the spirit of pines and cypresses.”
