中西戏剧文学的第一次交流,是从十八世纪上半叶开始的。1732年至1733年间,中国的元杂剧《赵氏孤儿》首先传入法国,随后出现了马若瑟(华名)的全译本。从四十年代到八十年代,英国先后出现了三种转译本。其间,欧洲又有四、五种改编本,包括英国哈切特、谋飞和法国伏尔泰的改本,它们均取名为《中国孤儿》。三十年中,《赵氏孤儿》传入了法、英、德等国家,不仅欧洲舞台经常演出,甚至美国舞台也演出。这说明我国戏曲早已引起西方的重视,很多剧作家和评论家都把目光转向中国。正如热心提倡世界文学的歌德所说:“我们一谈起远东,就不能不联想到最
