Shanghai Pudong Development Bank (SPD Bank) announced in January that its president Fu Jianhua, 61, resigned from his position due to the age. Ji Xiaoping, board chairman of SPD Bank will temporarily take the position as the president.
Fu Jianhua was born in 1951 and once worked in China Construction Bank as the vice president of its Jiangxi branch and Shanghai branch. He also took the president and board chairman of Bank of Shanghai. When he was in charge of Bank of Shanghai, the bank conducted several reforms, taking the lead in China. For example, it recruited an international financial company as its shareholder in 1999, becoming the first commercial bank with a foreign shareholder in China.
Fu Jianhua took the president of SPD Bank from 2006. After that this bank saw fast development. From 2008 to 2010, the annual growth rate of SPD Bank’s net profit exceeded 50%, higher than most of the other listed commercial banks of China. By the end of 2011, its assets volume had increased to 2.7 trillion yuan (USD 428.2 billion). But the experts thought that SPD Bank was far away from reaching its peak with a lot of innovation spaces unused. In addition, as a banking institution under the Shanghai municipal financial department, SPD Bank plays an important role in Shanghai’s plan of building an international financial center.
The resignation of Fu Jianhua raised the question about his successor. It is said that the new president will be chosen from the whole banking industry. It is a reform that the Shanghai government boosts. It is known that the process of choosing the new president will not be open to the public. At first several candidates are chosen by the experts inside and outside the bank. The final decision will be made by the board of directors of SPD Bank and the financial department of Shanghai government.
