会宁,是个依山傍水的古城,为古羌戎族所居。自公元前114年置祖厉县起,已有2100多年的历史了。会宁城不大,风景却别致。城东南二里许,石山拔地而起,其势若雄鹰展翼,搏击长空;其色艳似桃花,翠壁丹崖,故名桃花山。山上榆杏繁茂,怪石嶙峋。有庙堂佛龛20余处,历代名人所书匾额、楹联甚多,书法苍劲有神,灿然夺目。山下古老的祖厉河潺潺流淌。1936年10月中国工农红军一、二、四方面军主力在这里胜利会师。会宁便成为中外闻名的一大圣地。
