1982年,赤峰市图书馆建馆,建筑面积4200m~2。2011年,该馆喜迁新址,新馆建筑面积7800m~2,实现了面向全社会的免费开放服务。2012年,建成自治区一流的大型电子阅览室和数字图书馆,这标志着赤峰市图书馆进入了现代图书馆发展阶段。2013年,被文化部评定为国家二级图书馆;2014年,被评为全国文化系统先进单位和全区巾帼文明岗,同年被命名为内蒙古自治区社会科学普及基地。赤峰市图书馆现有馆藏书刊59万册(件),电子文献25万册,电子期刊10000余种,
