A bird’s eye view of a strange place can not be a great achievement, because we lack of landmarks to determine our own position. It is an exciting experience to watch once viewed from the sky in an area already known on the ground. For now, as we are far from the immediate scene, we begin to notice the whole of what we have previously overlooked; the general development of things seems to be more important than individual achievements. In this way, as we focus our attention again on the details of the situation, the overall overview of the things we obtain will, in turn, allow us to observe some new situations. The last volume of The Time - Living Art Series aims to provide such a holistic overview of Western art from the late Middle Ages to the present. In view of the other volumes highlight individual masters over the past 700 years
