2001年5月31日,印度外长兼国防部长辛格表示,印度政府当天正式批准了开发远程导弹系统的“烈火”计划。辛格同时还披露了目前印度短程、中程、中远程导弹的开发现状。他说,除“烈火”导弹外,印度从1983年开始实施的“综合制导导弹开发计划”目前正“稳步发展”,“大地”短程对地导弹、“特里舒尔”对空导弹、“阿卡什”中程地对空导弹和“纳格”第3代反坦克导弹等其他几种印度自行研制开发的导弹也都即将进入生产部署阶段。另据国外媒体透露,印还正积极发展洲际导弹。几年之内印度将成为世界导弹大国,具备全球核打击能力。
