Simone: Hey, Ludwig. How’s it been going lately?
Ludwig: Oh, hello there, Simone. Things have been excellent lately. Perfect. I’ve never been better. ①I’m walking on sunshine.
Simone: Really? Something tells me you’re being less than honest.
Ludwig: Rats! You’re right. Things haven’t been going well at all lately. ②What gave me away?
Simone: The eyes are the window to the soul, you know, and your eyes weren’t smiling.
Ludwig: I guess I can’t hide anything from the likes of you! How did you get such a high EQ, anyway?
Simone: I guess I’ve always just had a 1)knack for reading people. You have no need to be jealous, though; your IQ is so high it’s scary.
Ludwig: Well, thanks! ③However, my IQ hasn’t been pulling its own weight lately. No matter how smart I make myself look in job interviews, I can never land the job.
Simone: Ah, finally we get to the heart of the matter! You’re having trouble getting a job and you don’t know why.
Ludwig: ④Exactly! I go into every interview with guns 2)blazing. I always make sure they know I’m smarter than them, and yet they never seem to get it.
Simone: I think I know what the problem is.
Ludwig: How could you possibly know what the problem is? No 3)offense, but like you said earlier, I’m on another level in terms of IQ. If I can’t figure it out, I’m sure you can’t either.
Simone: See? That’s exactly the problem. ⑤You’re trying to cash in on your IQ, but what you don’t realize is that EQ is just as important for landing a job.
Ludwig: But I’m an engineer, not a 4)psychiatrist. EQ doesn’t help me design a better machine.
Simone: ⑥But you won’t be working in a 5)vacuum. No matter what you do for a living, you do it with other people, and working well with them is important.
Ludwig: I hadn’t thought about it that way.
Simone: To them, you’re just a fresh graduate with no experience. ⑦No matter how smart you are, if you think you already know everything, you’ll never grow into the job, and you’ll never learn to fit in with the rest of the team.
Ludwig: Your logic is sound. I admit my error. So how can I make them think I have sufficient EQ?
Simone: That was a pretty quick about-face. Well, the best way to convince you have a high EQ is to actually develop a high EQ. ⑧Spend more time listening to others, observing people, trying to imagine walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. Ludwig: I don’t have time for that much self-improvement. I need a quick fix, or I’ll be out of money before I get a job. Simone: Well, in that case, try acting more human in the interview. Make yourself look smart, but also humble. Try to connect with them as people, not just as engineers. Try to have a bit of the human touch.
  Ludwig: That sounds challenging.
Simone: I’m sure your IQ is up to the task!
Ludwig: Well, intelligence isn’t everything, you know.
  Simone: Now you’ve got it!
