Dennis: Welcome back to the show. We’re here today discussing different aspects of talent competitions.
Cara: And we’re about to touch on the nastier side of these competitions, which is…Dennis?
Dennis: Well, actually, a lot of things. ①It’s not all roses. First up: there’s always got to be a loser.
Cara: But I thought we just said that it’s win-win.
Dennis: To a certain extent, yes. But what about the people who don’t even make it into the competition?
Cara: ②Ah, you mean the ones who flunk out of 1)auditions.
Dennis: You’ve got to admit, it’s one of the most entertaining parts of those reality shows—watching the wannabes try to become somebodies.
  Cara: Hey now, be nice.
Dennis: I am being nice! C’mon, you’re telling me that ③you didn’t bust a gut when 2)William Hung got up there and tried to do She Bangs?
Cara: Oh my gosh, I had completely forgotten about that! Okay, I’ll give you that one. But that actually ended up pretty well for him. His video went 3)viral on the net and he became an overnight sensation.
Dennis: But that’s not how it always goes.
Cara: Sad but true. Most of the people who try out will never get their fifteen minutes of fame.
Dennis: And it’s got to be heartbreaking to have your dream stepped on.
Cara: Or it could be worse—what if your dream doesn’t quite fit the norm?
Dennis: Can you expand on that?
Cara: Have you ever been to some of those local dancing competitions? I swear, some of the performances are one step away from being rated 18A.
Dennis: Ah, yes. Not all “talents” are suitable for all ages. Oh, and remember that 4)episode of 5)Dancing with the Stars where the pro dancer was slapping Brandy in their training? Not exactly the most appropriate message to send out.
Cara: And that’s one of the biggest issues in my opinion—④are we really sending the right message to the young people out there who are 6)glued to these shows?
Dennis: Hard to say. Looking at some of these modeling or beauty competitions, I’d have to say no.
Cara: It’s heart 7)wrenching, isn’t it? Although some shows like 8)America’s Next Top Model do try to branch out with themes like “plus size”.
Dennis: While that’s definitely a step in the right direction, it doesn’t hit the core of the issue—we’re telling our youngsters that what someone else thinks of them is more important than what they think of themselves.
Cara: You know Dennis, ⑤I think you’ve pinned it down. Do talent shows build up or tear down self-esteem?
Dennis: I think that depends on how you felt about yourself in the first place. And for now, we’re out of time. See you again tomorrow morning folks!
