三千多年前,希腊有文字记载的神话故事,说有个长翅的狮身人面女妖斯芬克斯,出了一则谜语难人,谁猜不中就吃掉谁,谜语是:有一动物早晨四只脚,中午两只脚,晚上三只脚,脚多的时候走路反而慢。许多人猜不出被她吃掉。有个名叫奥狄浦斯的人揭了谜底:婴儿时四肢爬行,成年时两脚步行,老年时拄杖而行。女妖败了便自杀身亡。从神话传说到文字记载,不知经过几千年,它既有虚妄、幻想的一面,也有反映现实真情的一面。这一神话故事说明远古时代老年人即拄杖而行。
