The 7049-T73 forgings have stress corrosion resistance comparable to the 7075-T73, yet the strength of the 7075-T73 is 10-15% higher. Due to the 7049-T73 alloying elements, processing and heat treatment well together. Thus giving it high strength and good resistance to stress corrosion. To over-age the 7049-T73 for its stress corrosion resistance, the high zinc: magnesium retains more strength than the alloy. Low chromium content reduces the quench sensitivity, so 7049-T73 alloy in thick sections can get better strength. In addition, low chromium levels reduce directivity and make the performance more uniform. Low iron, silicon and copper content helps to maintain high fracture toughness. The fracture toughness, notched tensile strength and notched impact strength of 7049-T73 forgings are generally the same as for 7075-T6.
