广西地处我国南疆,气候炎热,雨量充沛,适宜甘蔗生长,种蔗面积200万亩,占全国种蔗面积的25%,仅次于广东,是我国重要蔗糖生产基地之一,也是广西壮族自治区开展农业生产的主要优势。为了大力促进广西蔗糖生产,开展甘蔗科学研究学术活动,广西有关单位的甘蔗生产科技工作者、农艺师、专家、教授等72人,于1980年12月12日至15日集中于南宁,成立广西甘蔗学会。
