The ATV, a logistic orbiter designed for on-orbit recharging missions at the Alpha International Space Station in Europe, is the most challenging requirement in ATV design for its autonomous on-orbit interaction with the manned space station. ATV is the first European aircraft developed with this capability. ATV is currently in Phase B of its development plan. The C / D phase plan, which includes the detailed design and development of the first flight model structure, began in 1997 and first flew in 2002. The paper focuses on the main results of Phase B, the baseline for determining the capabilities of its guidance, navigation and control (GNC) during the rendezvous of ATV with Alfa Space Station.
