香在中国的起源已无从考究,但从现代考古学的角度出发,可在上古遗迹中发现其留下的印迹。中国用香的历史可以溯及春秋之前,当时的“燎祭”就属于最早的用香行为。喜香之人常用下面这段话来概括中国香文化的历史渊源:萌芽于远古祭祀之礼;起始于春秋佩香之德;成型于汉代和香之贵;成熟于隋唐用香之华;普及于两宋燃香之广;完善于明清品香之势;衰败于乱世征战之忧;回春于安定和谐之世。
