在上古时期的汉语词汇,如在甲骨文中多以单音节词为主。从春秋战国开始,复音词数量开始增加,到现代汉语,复音词已经占了大多数,其中双音节的数量最多。周荐的《双字组合与词典收条》一文中统计到:在《现代汉语词典》中,双音节词占了67.625%,它们在现代汉语词汇中占有绝对的优势。而汉语最初的双音节复合词主要是由原句法成份凝合而成,其三种可能的途径分别是:
