毛主席纪念堂的屋顶结构采用自重比较轻的型钢梁和檩以及木椽子、木望板构造。保温材料采用5厘米厚的泡沫聚苯乙烯板。在上述设计方案确定以后,选用什么材料做屋面层和防水层才能满足质量轻又耐久的设计、使用要求,成了屋顶选材的主要矛盾。为此,现场指挥部组成了由三机部621研究所、北京市建筑设计院、北京市第六建筑工程公司参加的科研、设计、施工三结合小组,从调查研究入手,解决这个矛盾。
