Biotechnology is destined to play an increasingly important role in all aspects of human activity. To date, the progress made in the area of preventive medicine (such as new vaccines, new immunomodulators) and disease diagnosis and clinical monitoring has been of particular importance. In order to improve agricultural production, there are considerable potential for genetically modified plants and animals, or for genetic modification of soil bacteria. Unfortunately, the Taskforce found that there was a great lag in the planning and implementation of programs by the North and the developing countries and that the African Biological Sciences Network is a prominent example. Third world countries often suffer from the isolation of science and technology. This
