NEW YORK, Sept. 11—Silent tears and chokedback sobs marked the 10th anniversary on Sunday of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
The decade was marked across the nation with emotional memorial services in communities large and small to commemorate (纪念) the victims of one of the countrys darkest days. The largest event, and, of course, the focus of the worlds spotlight, was in New York City.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed on Sept. 11, 2001 when alQaeda terrorists crashed hijacked (劫持的)airplanes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center (WTC), the U.S. Defense Departments Pentagon headquarters in Virginia, and into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Also remembered were the six people killed in the 1993 smalltruck bombing of one of the twin towers, a failed alQaeda attempt to topple the tower.
There was fear in Washington and in New York for numerous bridges and tunnels where the police stopped vehicles and even inspected backpacks people carried into subways. Air Force F16 fighter jets scrambled (紧急起飞) to escort Flight 34 which reported three passengers locked themselves in the bathroom.
Officials said later they did not think the incident was related to terrorism.
U.S. President Barack Obama attended all three of the major memorials, in New York, Shanksville and Washington.
People participated in the commemoration ceremony in Elysian Park, Los Angeles on Sept. 11, 2011 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The New York ceremony began shortly after 8:30 a.m. with Mayor Michael Bloomberg who almost immediately paused for the first moment of silence to mark when the first airplane hit.
U.S. President Barack Obama read passages from the Bible and recitation of the names of the victims began.
Music ranged from the national anthem, “The StarSpangled Banner,” to songs including James Taylor with “Close Your Eyes” and Paul Simon singing “The Sound of Silence.”
Former U.S. President George W. Bush, who was president at the time of the attacks but then visiting the southern U.S. State of Florida, read a letter from former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln to the mother of five sons killed in the nations Civil War.
In all, the nearly fivehour New York ceremonies paused for moments of silence six times, two for the impacts of airliners, once for when each of the 110story twin towers toppled and two additional times to mark the Pentagon and Pennsylvania crashes.
At the Pentagon ceremony, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta topped the list of speakers where 184 people were killed. They both vowed to pursue al Qaeda until it was wiped out.
Late in afternoon, President Obama arrived from Shanksville to lay a wreath(花圈)at the Pentagon memorial.
In southeastern Pennsylvania, he also laid a wreath, but with his wife, Michele, in front of the wall of names and the thousand of people who had gathered at the crash site memorial set in a former farm field. He met with relatives of the 40 victims but did not deliver any remarks.

完美答案
1. D。细节判断题。D选项的内容在“…and recitation of the names of the victims began.”中提到了。由全文最后一句话可知,奥巴马没有在Shanksville发表演讲,排除A选项。由最后一段“In southeastern Pennsylvania, he also laid a wreath, but with his wife”可知,米歇尔参加了宾夕法尼亚的纪念会,没参加五角大楼的纪念仪式,排除B选项。
